Emiliene Sinobert is an Ojibway woman in her late fifties and a
citizen of Sagamok First
Nation in
Ontario.
Quillwork is part of her roots and she has spent the last twenty-five
years diligently handcrafting her quill boxes the traditional way. She
learned her craft from a respected and esteemed Elder, in her community
and now gives back to the native community by keeping the tradition
alive through teaching the youth and others who are interested in
learning the craft.
Quillwork is a long process from start to finish, if you are
going to do it the old way she says. Her husband Isadore. helps with
preparation and has even assisted with the quillwork itself. Preparation
includes gathering the birch bark, sweetgrass and quills used for the
boxes in the proper seasons then the quills must be cleaned sorted and
color dyed before they are ready for use. This team has produced
exquisite and beautiful work of the highest quality.
When I am working with the quills, I feel connected to nature
and for me this very healing and comfortable. She has sold her work
throughout the
United States
and Canada and is now reaching for markets in
Europe.
