DREAMER’S ROCK VISION
Two years ago, my cousin and I
went back to our homeland, which is located 200 miles north east of
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, to do an overnight fasting ceremony for a
special full moon that was occurring during a renewal of new growth
month.
When we arrived at our destination,
we traveled through a small series of lakes by boat and motor and came
to the place that I call Dreamer’s Rock, which is on Dog Lake
and is in our tribal territory. We had done ceremonies and fasting at
this sacred place before and knew that it is a very spiritual place,
where the spirits of our ancestors still come to see us today.
This spiritual place is accessible
by water and the top of the cliff is approximately 75 feet above the
water level. At the base of the cliff, there are rock paintings that
were drawn on the rock surface by our ancestors from many years ago.
There are paintings of
caribou,
moose, fish and a very clear painting of a Thunderbird. When we see
this type of painting it indicates that this area is a very sacred and
offer our tobacco and prayers when ever we visit this place.
At the bottom of the cliff is
a small rock beach which is big enough to pull our boat out of the water
and store it safely there from the waves, which can pound the boat against
the rocky beach. We, then unloaded our gear that we had bought for the
over night fasting ceremony and proceeded to haul that gear up to the
top of cliff. The top of the cliff is rocky but flat and there are trees
that provide protection from the elements while we would be fasting.
As we finished hauling our gear to the top, my cousin and I felt very
tired and sleepy, as if someone was putting us to sleep. We laid blankets
down on the bare rock and immediately fell into a deep restful sleep.
During that dreaming time, I became aware that someone else was with
us and in my dream I sat up and in front of me were two elders, a woman
and a man were sitting behind a long table on which were sitting 7 small
clay pots. They were dressed in traditional regalia and had different
colored bandanas around their heads. They did not speak but gave me
a clay pot and were taking medicines out of 7 clay pots and putting
a small amount into the pot that I held. I knew that they were giving
me medicines to help in the healing of others and felt honored that
they would be giving me these medicines. As of today, I still am unsure
as to what the medicines were but know that as I keep learning, the
answer will come to me.
When we woke up, it seemed that
we had slept for over 2 hours and were refreshed and renewed. I asked
my cousin, if he had dreamed and he replied he hadn’t, I then
told him about my dream and we sat talking and sharing about the dream
until we were ready to set up our lodge and prepare for the ceremonial
offerings for Grandmother Moon. We gathered dry sticks and birch bark
to start the ceremonial fire for our offerings. Before we lit the fire,
we did a smudging ceremony with sage, sweet grass, cedar and tobacco
which cleanses us from negativity and clears our minds and hearts. As
the fire was burning, we made up tobacco ties for our offerings to the
spirits and Grandmother Moon. We had bought cloth with us to make the
prayer offerings and proceeded to place tobacco on the cloth and tied
them up into small pouch shaped ties. These ties would be offered to
the fire and water when Grandmother Moon came up in the night sky. It
was truly a peaceful and happy time as my cousin and I made small talk
back and forth.
It wasn’t long before night
fell and we could see Grandmother Moon coming up in the horizon. I might
add here that from our vantage point we could see down the lake in three
different directions. As, Grandmother rose in the sky, we sang our songs,
prayed and offered our gifts to her and the Creator for the blessings
they had given us in our lives. We also offered tobacco ties to the
spirits of the water and thanked them for bringing us safely to this
sacred place. We sat around
the fire and gazed at Grandmother in the sky and at the beauty of her
long fingers of moon light on the water. There was no need to speak
as we felt that were totally wrapped in the love of that moment with
our Grandmother. As Grandmother rose in the sky, we became very sleepy
and crawled into our lodge to dream good dreams. The next morning, we
rose early, feeling renewed and ready for a new day. We did a sunrise
ceremony and thanking the Creator for that day, proceeded to take our
gear back down to the boat and prepare for our trip back home.
It was a beautiful time for us
and we were both thankful to be able to take the time to give thanks
and honor the one who had created us and had given us many of life’s
gifts.
Since that time I have spoken
with many traditional Elders and they have all told me the same thing,
that I received a gift to help others in healing and that the medicines
that were in the pots would be revealed to me in good time.
